Challenge #9: Midnight Sun Phrase
Submission Deadline: July 14, 2013
Midnight Sun composed by Lionel Hampton and Sonny Burke in 1947 is a pretty amazing ballad, I especially like the recording by Ella Fitzgerald. One you should definitely check out!
For this challenge, learn the first phrase of it by ear, recording embedded below. The melody, sung with words is what you’re learning. There is an intro before it, but don’t worry about that part.
So starting at 0:26 to about 0:31, ending with the word chalice.
The notes are fairly simple and it’s not too fast. Your focus should be on the phrasing (including the swing)/rhythm. Tone is important here too.
Hint:
If you hear a certain type of movement of the notes, a pattern, it will become much easier.
I’ll give you the first note, on tenor sax it’s a C#, on alto sax it’s a G#.
