Hey Neal, on your web. I have worked on lineman. The most productive WORK has come when you post examples like postings of Tequolla, I notice and Work it out for myself. this by title will help me. I will provide titles, so I can work. I need only base lines will Work out rest.
Neal says
Hey Melvin,
All right, glad you’ve done some with the Lindeman. So you’re saying you want help with the beginnings of songs and then work the rest out yourself? We could do that. Let me know some tunes you want to learn. Thanks
Neal says
Hey Tim, haha, yes, I wanted to narrow it down a little. I’ve got Plas Johnson’s ‘Positively’, when I was 12 he gave that to me. It was fun to see him live in Carmel.
Paul says
Hi Neal
1 JAZZ (and Blues)
2 STAN GETZ (admire Cannonball too)
3 CRITIQUES (but I haven’t taken much advantage of it yet)
I am so depressed with my sound that I often consider giving up. Until I enjoy or can tolerate my playing – improv, scales and dexterity feel very secondary. I play I Remember Clifford, Autumn Leaves, In a Sentimental Mood etc – sounds reasonable at the time but recordings seem pathetic. Of course this is the very reason I should send them in to you! I may feel better when the sun comes out.
Cheers
ps. The Survey button was dead.
Neal says
Hey Paul,
Thanks. Sound is important, the thing that will get it better the fastest is long tones (and ballads). How much time are you spending on that? Everything is connected though, so your finger technique will improve your sound too.
Send me a recording and I’ll check it out and help you make it better!
Thanks for letting me know about the button, seems like it works for some people, but not everyone.

Answers to the questions vary with the mood I’m in and is seldom as simple as checking a box. Lots of days Jazz would be on top (huge spectrum there and not limited to sax – two weeks ago Sunday morning was spent delving into the vocal Queens from before the 1930’s while reading the history and looking at and listening to YouTube excerpts, this morning was listening to Glenn Miller on the ipod speakers next to the bed just after getting up), some days Blues or Blue’s related (favorites of last two weeks: Clapton and Muddy Waters), some days classical (recently Schubert Lieder), occasionally some folk/pop related music is right for the day (recently several Eva Cassidy songs and a Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris recording have been played and replayed). Probably my favorite DVD of the past few months has been the Masalis/Clapton concert in Lincoln Center – pleasure pure of watching related but different genres merging into a bunch of really talented players having a ball.
The favorite of day is also often dependant on whether I feel like playing the sop, tenor sax or clarinet on that day.
Same holds true with Sax players, depends on wherever I’m at at the moment (recently flow has been Bechet to Mulligan to Getz to Desmond …different horns with different players at different times).
Thus couldn’t just leave it with a few checked boxes.
Neal says
Hey Bob,
I can understand that. Hadn’t heard of the Marsalis/Clapton combination, sounds interesting. Any thoughts on the last question about your favorite section? Thanks
KT says
I agree rock/blues blend is moving. Marsalis is a class act. Clapton and Marsalis was a great performance. Clapton’s St. James Infirmary helped me on that song even though he was not playing sax.
Neal says
Sounds like I might have to check that out!
Asha says

I think 2 weeks is needed to complete an assignment or goal.
Neal says
Hey Asha,
Thanks. Sometimes you might want two weeks, but I think a lot of times you can break things down into one week at a time. It does depend on how much you can practice though. What’s an example of something you think would take two weeks?
Jerry Price says
I took the survey but truthfully I would pick John Coltrane.
Neal says
Thanks Jerry, fair enough. Just emailed you about Bessie’s Blues
Gil Ross says
Hi Neal, besides Jazz, I do like smooth Jazz, Blues, Bossa Nova style, also you had Other, I like Contemporay Gospel like what Greg Vail plays, also Funk like what Euge Groove plays, heard him play at Yoshis in Oakland, and also Phil Woods.
Neal says
Hey Gil, cool, and thanks.

Neal says
Thanks Mel, what are some Latin jazz tunes you like?
Ermel says
I would like to play Ceora by Lee Morgan in a Latin Style and I’ll Remember April too.
KT says
I chose blues, but I like all types and like when a great artists blends genres. I think I like to listen to blues in different situations. I have been listening to jazz on drives and blues in quiet time. Not into hard rock, but like rock blended with some blues.
Wish I had more exposure to classical. Strictly a listener there.
Neal says
Thanks Kate,
You should play some classical then. I have spent some time on it. Maybe start with Bouree, did you get a chance to look at that one?
KT says
I actually printed Bouree, but only tried it once. I have one other classical piece to chip away at.
Doug says
